Changes in product marketing strategies - WTF?

Writer: Reut Bar KanaReut Bar Kana

In the past few months we have been witnessing some interesting changes in the strategies of how new products are brought to our attention. I’m obviously talking about “Threads”, the new social network Meta offers as a competitor against good old Twitter.

I must say, strange things are happening around this defining event - the launch of Threads. For instance, Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk announced that they will physically fight against each other in nothing less than the Colosseum in Rome. Surprisingly this ridiculous fight never really came true, and Threads just normally launched without it on July 5th.

The new app is appealing, designed to be Instagram's new baby sister, using the overall visual and design language. The product itself, aiming to exclusively use text as the content being shared between users following each other, sounds familiar right?. At first sight it’s hard to reveal the uniqueness of this product, with the looks of Instagram and the behavior of twitter - not quite sure yet what’s the exciting addition to mankind.

As There are no such things as coincidences in life, only 3 weeks after Threads launches, Twitter announces their new branding, letting go of the iconic bird and replacing it with an X instead. This very strange move is also not so clear to me, after all, why change a winning horse? not sure. The new X logo seems too obvious and boring, not a proper substitute for the bird. Perhaps I need a few more months to get used to it, both cognitively and mentally.

I think we can definitely see some interesting and unconventional marketing strategies and trends recently going on, especially within top corporations. Although I still can't wrap my head around what’s the core meaning of these changes and the idea behind them, I can say for sure that it’s working. After all, Threads gained more than 100 million users in less than 5 days, and that is absolutely insane.
