A Children’s Story for Grown-Ups

This story was inspired by a real experience I had in 2005, when I was 10 years old. Moving to New York was incredibly scary, but at the same time, it was such a meaningful, eye-opening, and formative experience.

Ever since, I’ve talked about that year with so much excitement. I love telling the weird and funny stories that happened to me there, and whenever Manhattan comes up in conversation, I immediately say: “Hey! I used to live there.”

In recent years, as the idea of leaving Israel comes up more and more often in conversations with friends or colleagues, I find myself remembering just how difficult such a move can be, and I talk about it with complete honesty.

It took me quite a few years to finally write and illustrate this short story. I think it came from some kind of longing for another crazy, life-changing experience, something that becomes so much harder to create once you’re grown up…
